Talkin’ Tarot with Kait Fowlie

Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community!  Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers three questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them!  I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

The newer stars on the tarot scene are sure shining brightly. Take Toronto tarot reader Kait Fowlie for example. It wasn’t hard for me to notice her – Kait’s smart interpretations on Instagram caught my attention. She has a way with words – and cards – that is both contemporary and healing at the same time. I’d also like to add: she has a wicked wit, something I appreciate.

In addition to reading the cards, Kait is a Reiki practitioner. On her site, she says: “Paired with tarot, reiki has helped me live a life filled with a lot of gratitude and love. I want this for everyone.” She also teaches. Her online course, Curio Tarot School, is a 7-week deep dive into the tarot fundamentals – and it’s getting rave reviews. Recently, she joined me on my Tarot Bytes podcast to talk about creating your own tarot practice. Her morning pages/tarot journaling mashup technique was pure genius. I think it’s one of the most valuable tips anyone has ever shared on Tarot Bytes.

Kait Fowlie is the tarot reader we all need right now. Get to her site – and you’ll see what my fuss is all about.

Q: What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Kait: My philosophy about tarot reading is that tarot works if you work it! I believe that anyone can benefit from the tool, but you really do get what you put in. The more focused and intentional we are in our readings, the more we take the time to learn about the cards, their symbols, and meanings – and the more we develop our own personal relationship with each of them, the better our readings will be! It takes time to do develop a rich relationship with tarot, but it’s so worth it.

Additionally, I believe that a tarot reading is only as helpful as we’re willing to take action on their messages. Tarot can change lives, but it does so by empowering us. We have to be willing to do the inner work the cards are suggesting to us, and also, take action in the outer world. We can’t just expect the cards to tell us when something is going to happen and then just wait for that day to come! A much more effective way to use the tarot, I say, is to ask how – how can I make this happen? Or, why is this not happening yet? What’s really going on here? The power of the tarot comes in the story we can create using it – we call back our power when we take control of our story.

Q: How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Kait: I always ask people when they sit down with me if they have a question/area of focus or if they just want to do a general check-in with the universe. I tend to find that the readings where I get asked a specific question are the most productive. The more specific someone is about their situation, the more specific I can be in my answer. While I’m very intuitive, I’m not a mind reader. When someone tells me exactly what they want to know, I’m able to give a very targeted response.

I think the reason people often want a general reading is because they’re just curious to see what comes up – they don’t want to rule out any messages that spirit might want to deliver. The thing is: Whatever needs to come up will come up, no matter what. So if you tell me what’s really on your mind and heart, we have a better chance of getting you the guidance you need.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring Tarot reader?

Kait: Commit to the craft. Take your passion for tarot seriously and you will master it, eventually. It’s a journey – and there is no short cut to any place worth going when it comes to learning this! If you’re just starting and you’re overwhelmed by the idea of learning all 78 cards, here’s what I suggest: don’t try to find a way to learn them all at once, just commit to doing a daily draw every day. Look up the meaning in the little white book, and think about it’s message or you, and see how it plays out in your day. You’ll see it come up again and you’ll have a little bit more of a relationship with it than before. It’ll build over time. And never underestimate the real power of a tarot journal – writing about your impressions after pulling a card or doing a reading for yourself activates the messages, is what I find.

Also, if I could add one last piece of support: get you a community! We’re all on the world wide web now and we can all find each other and hang out in our digital spaces. No one ever needs to feel alone, these days, as a tarot reader. What a blessing! Sign up for an online course or follow other readers who are just learning and develop relationships so you can maybe do readings on each other on FaceTime, for example. There’s literally never any harm in asking. Put yourself out there – don’t deny yourself the magic you could potentially bring into your life.
