I’m in the business of looking for signs from the Universe. Those signs might come in the form of a dream, funny feeling, musical oracle, or turn of a tarot card. Mama told me to never ignore those messages…so I don’t.
I always tell folks that they should look for those mystical signs too. So why is it that I am on the hot lookout for an omen yet I choose to ignore the practical less-cosmic signals such as the beep of a battery…or a creaky leaky furnace?
Perhaps it’s because changing a battery or getting a new heating system installed isn’t very glam or spooky. Plus, they don’t make good stories like the time I had a funny feeling about a dude…who turned out to be a murderer.
This week, the only thing that died was that damn furnace. It wasn’t a surprise either. I saw it coming for two years. In fact, the last time a guy came to service it, he pointed out the rust and told me it was on its last legs.
Yet I refused to do anything about it. Instead, I operated on a wing and a prayer, hoping that somehow it would keep on chugging along. Until one day it didn’t.
I believe this is called denial.
Why do I choose to ignore the obvious? Why is it so easy for me to keep my eyes on high alert for some random signal from an exotic bird in a glitter-fueled multi-colored dream when there are black and white, real issues that need my attention right here on earth?
Perhaps it’s because living in the mystical realms is more comfortable…or fun. Who knows? All I do know is that I have a new furnace with a high tech thermostat which will alert me to any little thing that might be wrong with this sucker. In other words, now the signs will be impossible to ignore.
These cats are “frenemies” but a busted furnace had them pretending to be BFFs!
